Policeman fires gun at teacher

An off-duty police officer who allegedly shot and injured a teacher before turning the gun on himself following an altercation on Tuesday has been identified as 58-year-old Nkosiphendule Mamazana.

Eastern Cape police spokeswoman Colonel Sibongile Soci, while unable to provide further details on the incident, said Mamazana had been attached to the Mthatha public order police unit.

She also confirmed that the officer had shot and injured a 45-year-old woman following an altercation at a school premises in Qumbu around midday on Tuesday.

“The victim was rushed to hospital in Mthatha.Our office is unable to furnish with the name of the victim,” she added.

The motive for the shooting is not yet known and will form part of the investigation by Qumbu South African Police Services, confirmed Soci.
