Abattoir’s bloody waste a health risk

Cambridge Location residents are crying foul over animal waste washing up in front of their homes, which allegedly comes from the East London Abattoir.

Residents who live directly opposite the abattoir in Madolwana Street complain that blood and waste often flow from there, ending up in a smelly pool in front of their shacks.

The dirty water also flows into the graveyard and nearby playground, leaving children with nowhere to play.

Resident Asahluma Zondi said she worries about their health as the dirty water attracts flies.

“This happens almost every day. Sometimes the bloody water covers the street, leaving us with nowhere to walk,” she said.

“There is even a pool of it in the bushy area behind our shacks. It stinks. We are so worried about our health. This water attracts huge flies to our homes and they sit on almost everything we eat.

“We don’t even let our children play in the playground because the water gushes onto that grass and they end up stepping on it and playing in it. We would rather they play at home.”

Another resident, Luyanda Qukulu, a member of the youth committee, said he had tried to complain to the abattoir on numerous occasions but nothing had changed.

“When we complain to the managers of the place then they take it that we want the place to close. That's not what we want at all, we just need them to sort this matter out.

“Its not fair that we have to live like this. The entire street smells like something has died and there is animal waste everywhere.

“They should at least come out here to clean this up,” Qukulu said.

In a report published in the Daily Dispatch last year, abattoir manager Frans van der Vyver put the problem down to their truck washing tip, which he said had been incorrectly fitted, resulting in the spillage.

Van der Vyver had promised to have the matter resolved.

Contacted yesterday, Van der Vyver said he was not aware the problem was still ongoing.

“This is the first I’m hearing of it. I’ll definitely investigate the matter and do all in my power to have it resolved,” he said.

When the Dispatch arrived in the area, a constant stream of dirty water was flowing from the abattoir’s back gate, forming a pool in the gutter.
