Amathole list conference conflict: ANC leaders not on same page

ANC leaders yesterday made conflicting statements on when the party’s much-awaited Amathole’s regional list conference would finally convene.

The list conference has been delayed for more than a week, pending implementations of the provincial list committee (PLC) report, and has raised tensions between regional and provincial leaders.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday, ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane said due to the outstanding issues that needed to be addressed, the list conference would convene today.

“From where I’m sitting, the conference is not today , it’s tomorrow . Because the process of capturing sub-regions will take long, it is not realistic to start the conference today ,” Mabuyane said.

However, in a contradictory statement, the Amathole regional secretary Teris Ntutu said the conference would convene last night.

“It’s an overnight conference.”

In a letter to all branches in the region, Ntutu specifies that the conference would be held on May 12.

He further stated the conference would take place at Fort Cox Agricultural College near Middledrift, where conference registration was to take place at midday yesterday.

“Invited are strictly branch chairperson and secretaries and alliance partners in line with the candidate selection guidelines,” Ntutu said.

The region has been one of two in the province that still had to finalise its candidate list for the August 3 local government elections.

The Joe Gqabi region is now the only region that has yet to consolidate its candidate list.

Last month, the Dispatch reported that Ntutu came under fire for allegedly failing to cooperate with the provincial leadership which recommended the Amathole region implements the outcomes of the appeals of the PLC.

Mabuyane told the Dispatch yesterday the decision was taken by the PLC and the provincial executive committee.

“When the decisions are implemented, that will give a fair opportunity to everyone, and every branch. The reason they delayed their list conference is because we gave them an opportunity to do this.

“We expect that all those branches are done and the IBC issues are sorted because if they are not, that will discredit credentials of the list conference,” Mabuyane said.

In a letter seen by the Dispatch, Mabuyane wrote to PEC deployees on Tuesday, urging them to “resolve all outstanding matters” on the establishment of interim branch committees in the region.

“The branches are waiting for the implementation of the PLC/PEC decision by the RLC as per the PLC report.

“The non-implementation of these decisions undermines the decisions of the PEC,” part of the letter reads.

However, late yesterday Ntutu said that all outstanding matters have been finalised by the region.

“All issues have been addressed. The administration process, is a process that we’ve dealt with together with the PLC.

“All appeals have been implemented but what was lacking was to explain to people the status of their appeals,” Ntutu said. – siphem@dispatch.co.za
