Police have recovered the body of the step-son of ANC Buffalo City Metro mayoral candidate Xola Pakati.

Police spokesman Captain Mluleki Mbi said the body of 22-year-old Aphelele Katiya was recovered in the rubble of the Stoney Drift dumpsite yesterday morning.

He had been electrocuted by a live wire, Mbi said.

Katiya's body was found at 8am by residents of the area.

"His mother Zandile Pakati reported him missing on Thursday at the Cambridge Police Station. An inquest docket has been opened for investigation," Mbi said.

Pakati confirmed the death this morning. He said: "We received sad news of the passing of the boy under very mysterious circumstances. We don't know what happened."

BCM spokesman Sibusiso Cindi said they had been alerted to the incident.

"I can confirm that it is true that Aphelele Katiya is late. Allegedly he died after being electrocuted by a live wire. The post mortem will determine the actual cause of his death.

As BCMM we would like to send our condolences to the families of Katiya and Pakati. They are with us in our prayers," Cindi sais.

Katiya was due to stand trial in September in connection with a house-breaking case that took place last December at the home of former ANC youth league provincial chairman Ayanda Matiti.

He was arrested alongside two other suspects for allegedly breaking into Matiti's house stealing Jewellery and other valuables worth more than R26000.
