ANC confident it will be victorious on August 3

The ruling African National Congress is adamant that it will hold onto power in all the municipalities currently under its control as well as wrest the Midvaal municipality in Gauteng from the Democratic Alliance.

“We are going to maintain all the municipalities that we are in charge of and we will also win Midvaal here in Gauteng Western Cape as we never go into a battle with an intention to lose‚” the ANC’s elections head‚ Nomvula Mokonyane‚ said on Sunday.

She was being interviewed live on eNCA television news ahead of the ANC’s final national Siyanqoba rally being held at the Ellis Park stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday.

“Every vote counts and we are going to go out and do door-to-door campaigns highly charged to make sure that come August 3‚ every voter goes to vote first thing in the morning and vote the ANC‚” said Mokonyane.

Starting with special votes on Monday‚ Mokonyane — who is also the Minister of Water Affairs and Sanitation — said despite unprecedented protests over the ANC’s candidates’ list which also led to the killing of candidates‚ the ANC will emerge victorious.

“The ANC has been able to deal with those realities of loss of life that was not supposed to have happened‚ destruction of property‚ our tedious process of selection of candidates… But yes‚ we have turned the tides.

“As we speak‚ Tshwane is in our hands. In KwaZulu-Natal‚ we refuse to be disrupted by those who think the ANC will be scared. We are saying‚ on behalf of those who died having availed themselves to serve the ANC‚ we will win triumphantly in KwaZulu-Natal.”

Thousands of ANC members took their frustrations to the streets as well as to the ruling party’s headquarters‚ Luthuli House‚ after the party’s national list committee announced their candidates for the local government elections.

Violence in President Jacob Zuma’s home province also continued unabated resulting in at least 13 candidates being killed.
