"Amacala" singing sensation Siphokazi will be the main attraction at the Mhlontlo Easter Festival taking place on Saturday afternoon.

The inaugural event is to be held at the Tsolo Junction multi-purpose centre.

The award-winning jazz artist said she could not wait to hit the stage. “It’s always a joy performing back home. It’s been a long time coming.”

She was working on a new album. “I don’t want to make any promises because things are different when you work for yourself.”

Siphokazi’s contract with Native Rhythm ended in 2009, and in 2010 she joined EMI to record only one album. She has been working as an independent artist since.

“It’s not easy at all because you must save money from your gigs and get studio time. I know it will all be worth it one day when I own the rights to my own music.”

She says she has grown as a musician and businesswoman. “When you are signed you are not treated as a businessperson; you are not involved in any decision-making processes. Now, I am able to market my own brand.’”

She would not say when her fourth album would come out but was confident it would reach the shelves. “Everybody lives to tell a story; this is my story and I am confident that my album will come out despite the challenges.”

At the event, the Lusikisiki-born singer is to share the stage with the likes of Durban Nyts – who are known for Shumaya – Ichwane LeBhaca, Teddy Bears, DJ PK, Funksta and various groups from the area.

Event organiser Nkosi Gqomo said more than 4000 people were expected to attend.

“Last year we hosted the first Mnquma Jazz Festival and it was a success ... we are confident that this will also have a good turnout.”

Tickets at R60 and R200 for VIP ones are available at Computicket. Gqomo said the show would begin at 2pm.
