Divine intervention is needed to heal social ills and to fight corruption and fraud in Buffalo City Metro.

This was according to newly appointed mayor Alfred Mtsi who was speaking at a special prayer service yesterday.

The service was the initiative of the Faith Alive Bible Church and was held at the Nederduits Gereformeerde Kerk (NGK) church building in Southernwood.

More than 20 different church leaders attended the service to pray for Mtsi and the metro.

Mtsi, who was accompanied by his wife, Nolundi, addressed the congregation and said there were some issues that could only be resolved through divine intervention.

“As human beings there are challenges that we cannot manage on our own.”

The mayor spoke about recent shack-fire tragedies in which people were killed.

In the past two months the Dispatch has reported on the deaths of six people in shack fires around the metro, including two brothers aged 3 and 5 from Mdantsane, a woman of 55 from Mdant-

sane and three male relatives from Ndevana.

Mtsi also brought up two kidnappings of East London children by their nannies this month.

“It is only through the intervention of the spirit of God that those kidnappers will change their minds and bring the children back,” he said.

Other challenges faced by leaders were service-delivery issues, he added.

“To ensure that the mandate of the Constitution is carried out we have to ensure people are at the centre of service delivery.

“We envisage a city with fewer potholes, houses for all and for issues such as ageing infrastructure and lack of proper sanitation facilities to be addressed.”

Senior pastor at Faith Alive Bible Church Simphiwe Nojoko said it was normal for the congregation to pray for the city and they decided to invite the mayor and other pastors to join in the service.

“We pray for the city at every service but we felt it was fitting to invite the new mayor and other pastors to join us.

“We hope this will be the turning of the tide for BCM and hope there will be change,” Nojoko said.

Pastor Laurette Mkati from Community Church Bhisho said: “We have knelt down on the stairs of the City Hall to pray for change and we believe that you will turn the tide”.

Mtsi ended his address with an amended quote from late president Nelson Mandela: “This nation needs an RDP of the soul.

“BCM needs an RDP of the soul,” Mtsi said. — arethal@dispatch.co.za
