EASTERN Cape’s cricket teams Border and Eastern Province, fell to huge defeats on the fourth day of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) National U15 Cricket Week in East London yesterday.

Border were skittled for just 38 yesterday morning and the match was over before lunch, as KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Inland reached 40/3 after 9.5 overs to claim a comprehensive seven-wicket win.

And EP were thoroughly outplayed by Boland, who beat them by 144 runs. Boland scored 245/3 in their 50 overs, with EP falling to 101 all-out in their reply.

Free State were also defeated by a large margin after KZN Coastal scored 240/7 in their 50 overs, before bowling the Free Staters out for 153 to seal an 87-run win.

But despite the loss, Free State still made it through to the main game and play Boland in their final match at Buffalo Park today.

Free State and Boland both lost matches against KZN Coastal. Boland was defeated in a T20 on Saturday, but impressive outright time cricket victories on the first two days clearly played a big part in securing them the top two spots.

KZN Coastal, EP, Western Province and South Western Districts also only lost once, with first innings losses in time cricket counting as a loss, and they will all look to end their week on a high.

There are no other play-off matches, so EP will take on Gauteng at Selborne College tomorrow and Border will play SWD at Police Park in their final matches of the tournament. In yesterday’s play a poor batting performance by Border proved to be their undoing as they suffered a heavy defeat.

A superb bowling performance from former Stirling Primary pupil James Ritchie, who played for the Border U13s in 2013, helped KZN Inland skittle Border’s batting line-up.

Ritchie picked up 5/3 in 5.3 overs, tearing through Border’s lower and middle order. Only Border captain Matt Dewar (16) made double figures, with no other batsman scoring higher than four.

Border opening bowler Sebastian Denison-Brown gave his team a glimmer of hope with a ferocious opening spell as he reduced Inland to 13/3.

However his valiant effort of 3/7 off five overs was in vain as Inland's Gareth Schreuder (22 off 18 balls, 5x4) launched them to victory.

In the EP v Boland match, an unbeaten 113-run fourth wicket stand between Marthus Coetzee (100no) and Gareth Wolmarans (55no) superbly set Boland up for the win.

EP’s Manelisi Maqungu (1/15 off five) and Calum du Plessis (1/28 off 10) bowled well but the rest did not back them up enough.

Their chase then never got off the ground, as they slipped to 22/4 within the first 10 overs, following which Tristan Stubbs (30) and Nicholas Wilmot (24) shared in a gritty 57-run stand in 19.3 overs, but once they fell, the rest followed and EP were all out for 101.

Northern Cape beat Limpopo by two wickets, Mpumalanga beat Easterns by 64 runs, Northerns beat North West by six wickets, Gauteng beat SWD by 107 runs and WP beat Namibia by 165 runs.
