The Border region’s dominance of boxing has never been questioned but sadly there has never been a dedicated publication solely reciprocating the love the locals have for the sport.

But the wait is over after the Daily Dispatch decided to come up with a publication which will capture all the thrills and spills of the sweet science in the form of Boxing Mecca scheduled to hit the streets tomorrow.

While the first copy will be eight pages, it is expected to increase as the demand soars.

Daily Dispatch editor Bongani Siqoko, an avid boxing fan himself who was shipped to Johannesburg as one of the school kids to watch Mdantsane boxing legend Jackie Gunguluza in his failed attempt to dethrone American Jon Jon Molina, is thrilled with the launch of the boxing publication.

“All over the world the Border region is known as the Mecca of boxing but we have never capitalized on this and give boxing lovers their own publication until now,” he said.

“Now that it is here we urge them to support it and make it even bigger as they have done with the Daily Dispatch throughout the years. Boxing Mecca is here and it is yours, take it, read it and own it by offering suggestions while criticizing it if you feel it does not serve you. Boxing is one of the few sport codes that involves swapping of punches so let’s swap ideas and come out as winners all of us.”

The publication will be edited by multiple award-boxing journalist Mesuli Zifo in conjunction with the entire sports team of the Dispatch. Other partners and contributors will be announced in due course.
