South Africans need to brace themselves as night temperatures are expected to take a dip on Monday evening‚ the South African Weather Services (SAWS) said on Monday.
Speaking to Tiso Black Star Group Digital‚ SAWS forecaster Wayne Venter said that temperatures in the interior of the Eastern Cape as well as the interior of the Free State never rose above 10º C on Monday.
“Night temperatures are expected to drop this evening and will continue into the early hours of tomorrow morning‚” Venter said.
“Morning temperatures are expected to be below freezing level in the Vryburg area which will be -4 ºC‚ and Upington will be -2 ºC‚ while the western interior of South Africa will also experience temperatures below freezing level‚” he said.
According to an earlier report‚ a family of three were trapped in their car due to heavy snowfalls near the town of Kokstad in KwaZulu-Natal on Monday. Road Traffic Inspectorate’s Zinhle Mngomezulu said the family was warned by traffic officers not to venture further when their car became entrapped in the snow on the R617.
This while East Coast Radio reported that a KwaZulu-Natal farm owner now faces thousands of rand damages as “snow chasers” have cut fences along her four farms to play in the snow.
“Marezelda Breet who owns the Sussex‚ Collegiate‚ Poplar Grove and White Rocks Farms says she had to call police after getting into an argument over them being on her land illegally yesterday‚” the report read.
“Yesterday alone on a small 10km stretch we found nine or ten places where things were broken and there were like 200 people that we have counted that were in the land‚” she said.
Heavy rains also battered the province on Monday afternoon causing flash floods and blocked roads.
Rainfall is expected to move in over the Western Cape on Monday evening‚ and a significant amount of rainfall is expected over the south-east coast from this evening until later on Tuesday morning.
“Continuous rainfall is also expected in KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State‚” Venter said.
The forecaster added that South Africans need to be advised of high sea levels along the coast between Cape Town and Durban.
“High seas are expected tomorrow along the coast from Cape Town to Durban with waves with a height in excess of 6 metres.
“A storm surge between Cape Agulhlas and Stillbay with strong winds‚ high seas‚ spring tide and extreme high tides is also expected.
“Warning of gale force easterly and north easterly winds between Cape St Francis and Port Edward from tonight and will continue into tomorrow morning‚” Venter said.
While temperatures are expected to rise slightly on Wednesday afternoon‚ another cold front is expected to fall over the Western Cape on Thursday‚ Venter added.
