Chris Hani's killer Clive Derby-Lewis granted medical parole

Convicted killer Clive Derby-Lewis has been granted medical parole, Judge Selby Baqwa ruled at the High Court in Pretoria today.

Derby-Lewis‚ who was serving a life sentence for his part in the killing of SA Communist Party leader Chris Hani‚ had already served about 20 years of his sentence.

In his ruling, Baqwa said he had received lengthy submissions from Justice Minister Michael Masutha and the legal representative for Derby-Lewis, Roelof du Plessis.

“Life of an individual includes dying,” said the judge in granting the medical parole. “Everyone has the right to die with dignity.”

Baqwa said placement on parole will be determined by Parole board.

Derby-Lewis’ wife and family members were in tears as Judge Baqwa announced his judgement

Earlier in his previous parole application, which was denied by Justice Minister Masutha, head of nuclear medicine at the University of Pretoria Mike Sathekge‚ who advised the Medical Parole Advisory Board (MPAB)‚ did not think that Derby-Lewis' cancer had spread.

However‚ two other independent doctors‚ Dr Wadee and Dr Lalloo‚ both diagnosed Derby-Lewis with a stage-four cancer.
