It is clear that the SABC is being dictated to by someone who is taking instructions from President Jacob Zuma‚ DA leader Mmusi Maimane said on Tuesday.

The Democratic Alliance was picketing outside the SABC headquarters in Johannesburg.

This followed a dramatic few days for the SABC which saw its acting CEO Jimi Matthews resign and three senior staff members writing an open letter to COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng raising concerns about the goings-on at the public broadcaster and recent editorial policy decisions taken.

Economics editor Thandeka Gqubule‚ RSG executive producer Foeta Krige‚ and senior journalist Suna Venter have all been suspended for disagreeing with an instruction during a diary conference not to cover the Right2Know campaign’s protest against censorship at the SABC.

Maimane said so many South Africans had fought for freedom of the press and Motsoeneng was reversing the work done.

“The apartheid government captured the SABC to make it a state broadcaster and we constitutionally agreed that it must be a public broadcaster and therefore what Hlaudi Motsoeneng is doing is reversing the gains of our freedom.

“Many journalists are now being suspended for wanting to show the news which is accurate‚ that is transparent for the people of South Africa.”

Maimane claimed that Motsoeneng was being protected by Zuma.

The DA was calling for Motsoeneng to be removed from his position.

Maimane said the DA stood in solidarity with the suspended employees.

“We will continue to say Hlaudi must go because we can’t tolerate censorship.”
