Congregants spruce up overgrown cemetery

Armed with weed-eaters, rakes, pangas and chainsaws, almost 100 men, women and children of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints cleaned up a large section of the Cambridge Cemetery at the weekend.

“If we can build bridges and get other churches to help or communities involved, then we have achieved our aim,” he said.

Krull said the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints held annual events of service across the globe on one day a year – this year on August 20 – but that the East London congregations had decided to do good community deeds more often.

“This year our theme is ‘hand in hand with local government’,” said Krull, whose grandparents are buried at the cemetery.

“For many of us this was personal. We are very family- oriented and the cemetery has not been a safe place to visit because it is overgrown with grass and bush, and you are at risk of being attacked.”

He said the Mormon Helping Hands group had also worked at the cemetery two months ago and aimed to work their way through the entire site.

“We have only done about a quarter because it is massive, but if we could clean the whole cemetery we would be stoked.

“We want to invite BCM officials to a hand-over on August20,” he said.

The cleanup attracted praise on Facebook.

“My little boy is laid to rest there and I am truly grateful that you have done this,” Sue Green wrote. — barbarah@dispatch.co.za
