The Congress of the People (Cope) has always believed that the country’s president‚ its provinces’ premiers and all mayors should be elected directly by the people.

So it follows‚ said the party‚ that "the same should system should apply in electing the president of a political party".

According to Cope’s highest decision making body‚ the Congress National Committee‚ it will be so after it "adopted a ground-breaking constitution" which allows "the rank and file membership to directly elect Cope’s president" rather than "delegates as is currently the norm with other parties".

This‚ the party said on Monday‚ is "per the directives of the extraordinary national congress in June 2015" and the "new constitution‚ in our view‚ stands above the constitutions of other political parties in South Africa".

"We are now poised to change the political landscape of the country for the better. By so doing‚ we will assume our rightful position in the politics of our country‚" Cope’s Dennis Bloem said.

First up on Cope’s agenda will be the forthcoming local government elections which‚ Bloem said‚ "will be an acid test of our present resolve to achieve renewal and to make progress".
