COPE supports ‘Zuma must go’ protest

Congress of the People (COPE) president Mosiuoa Lekota and many of the party’s supporters joined a civil society protest in Johannesburg on Wednesday calling for the ANC to recall President Jacob Zuma.

“We want to join our efforts with those who wish to free South Africa of state capture‚ corruption‚ erosion of the Constitution‚ sycophancy‚ extravagance‚ crime‚ greed‚ incompetence and continuous abuse of power‚” said COPE spokesman Dennis Bloem.

“This Freedom Day will serve as the watershed. People will begin to take to the streets en masse to demand Zuma’s recall. Our structures‚ around the country‚ will be actively working with civil society to protect the gains of our democracy. It will never be business as usual from today‚” Bloem added.

He said South Africans must recognise that this was a pivotal moment in the country’s new history.

“We overcame the apartheid government and we will not rest until Zuma who broke his oath of office and continues to give short shrift to the judgment of the Constitutional Court is gone.

“If the ANC continues to resist public offence at the behaviour of Zuma and his administration‚ the local government elections must become our rallying point to show that sovereignty belongs entirely to the people and that the will of the people must and will prevail.

“We add our voice to those of others in our society for decency‚ goodness and constitutional compliance‚” Bloem said.
