East London police are searching for the mother of a dead newborn baby girl after its tiny body was found in a plastic bag inside the city’s public toilets yesterday afternoon.

Police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala said the grisly find was made at 3pm by a toilet cleaner while busy cleaning the toilets situated in Argyle Road.

Mqala said the body was taken to the Woodbrook government mortuary to determine the cause of death.

“A murder docket has been opened for investigation but no arrest has been made yet,” Mqala said.

When the Daily Dispatch team arrived at the scene, Argyle Road was cordoned off by police crime scene tapes while investigators were inspecting the naked infant.

The baby’s umbilical cord and the placenta were not found in the plastic bag.

There were about 10 bystanders who all said they were not at the scene at the time the baby was discovered.

Mqala said anyone who is able to identify the baby’s mother is urged to call East London police detectives on 043-707-0687/2 or CrimeStop on 08600 10111. — zwangam@dispatch.co.za
