Crowds thrill to beach and music festivals in East London

EAST London’s beachfront was the destination for holidaymakers this weekend during the city’s leg of the Buffalo City Metro (BCM) carnival and the first ever beach party hosted by the Cino Shearer Foundation.

The foundation’s project manager Pumeza Kwababa said of Saturday’s event: “It was wonderful. The only thing that was a let down is that people don’t seem to know where Orient Beach is.” She said the turnout was great nonetheless, and fun was had by young and old alike. BCM mayor Zukiswa Ncitha stayed for hours and joined in the fun. The party included volleyball and soccer along with performances.

Prizes were awarded in partnership with Nedbank and Spar. No incidents were reported.

The foundation used the platform to scout for talent using dance and singing auditions.

Kwababa said it seemed no one knew that they were also looking for DJs and as such there were no entrants in this category.

She said a dance group had won the opportunity to tour with Sinyaka during the Redbull London Tour next year. The foundation would assist the group with accreditation and travel requirements.

A band won a recording deal which will be facilitated by the foundation; two teenage girls won the opportunity to dance on Ishmael’s video on his upcoming album.

“We are grateful to BCM for

their support; we plan to make this an annual occasion, with the talent search, because we want to groom East London,” she said.

Tomorrow, in the spirit of Christmas, the foundation will give food parcels to 70 homes around East London in partnership with Amalinda Spar.

The foundation’s founder, Shearer, is Ishmael’s publicist.
