Beauties with brains and compassion

By ZISANDA NKONKOBE

Besides being the beauty who represents South Africa, Miss South Africa pageant winners all have a mandate to give back through charity, while also having the perfect platform to follow their chosen career paths after passing on the crown.

  • Current Miss South Africa Ntandoyenkosi Kunene, crowned the ultimate beauty on March 19 at the finals held at Carnival City, recently graduated with her honours in education.

To give back to charity, Kunene is among a number of celebrities involved in the Stop Hunger Now campaign, which seeks to pack 450000 meals to feed hungry children in honour of the Nelson Mandela 67 minutes campaign.

Passionate about education, Kunene is also involved in a winter drive for disadvantaged schoolchildren by collecting new and previously loved beanies, scarves and gloves.

With 500 in the bag by the end of June, the beauty has set her sights on raising 5000 sets, using a lunch date with her as a incentive.

  • Rolene Strauss, who took the crown in 2014 during her fourth year at medical school, has since formed the Strauss Foundation.

The foundation aims to give back to the community with a strong focus on women’s health, education and charity.

  • Miss South Africa 2009 winner Nicole Flint, who studied media, maintains a full-time gig at Jacaranda FM while also featuring in a number of television ads and on catwalks as a model.

Flint has been involved in the Charity Cycle Tour, an event consisting of a gruelling seven days of intense cycling covering a distance of 1645km with a minimum of 220km per day.

The cycle tour was in aid of several charities.

  • Claudia Henkel, who took the crown in 2004, studies law with a passion to change the world.

Currently involved in sporadic charitable events – such as a golf day in Houghton recently which aimed to raise funds for children who dream of playing soccer, and assisting with a soup kitchen – Henkel also runs an events and public relations company while also being Sun International’s public relations manager. — zisandan@dispatch.co.za
