BOXING in the region will this week take a giant leap towards the international mainstream media when a tournament is beamed live on internet via Dispatch Online.
The Sijuta Promotions show featuring the SA middleweight title clash between reigning champion Christopher Buthelezi and Makhosonke Zwengu at the Mdantsane Indoor Centre today will be shown live on internet, becoming the first ever boxing tournament in the country to do so.
The move is the latest innovation of Sijuta Promotion boss Andile Sidinile who thrives on introducing new methods to make boxing even more appealing.
Sidinile, who already produces his own shows, clinched the deal with Daily Dispatch this week in what will afford boxing in the region worldwide exposure.
“East London is known throughout the world as the Mecca of boxing in South Africa yet we do not really get an opportunity to market our talent worldwide,” he said.
“With our partnership with the Daily Dispatch which is the best boxing publication in the country, we felt that we can help each other sell our boxing talent worldwide.”
His Sijuta Promotions also guide the career of top US women boxer Laila McCarter who is the reigning WBA junior-middleweight champion.
Daily Dispatch editor Bongani Siqoko said the partnership was long overdue in a region which prides itself as the boxing hub in the country.
“We are excited to be part of this venture with Sijuta and we are confident that it will give boxing in the province the punch it deserves,” he said.
The stream will first be done at today’s weigh-in of the fight which will also feature and eagerly-anticipated clash between the province’s lone white boxer Giovanni Bushby and former national champion Sikhulule Sidzumo.
The weigh-in takes place at the Mdantsane Indoor Centre at 1pm today.
