Double cup showtime for EL

East London soccer fans will be put to the test again this weekend with top-flight football returning to the City with two back-to-back Nedbank Cup matches on Saturday and Sunday.

Chippa United take on giant-killers and NFD log-leaders Baroka FC on Sunday afternoon, with Bhisho-based ABC Motsepe League side EC Bees due for a meeting with their Limpopo provincial league counterpart Magesi FC.

The BCM football faithful have packed the Buffalo City Stadium the previous two times top-flight football was in town. BCM football LOC head Sthembiso Khanyile said he expected the same scenes come this weekend.

The match everyone will be looking forward to is the Chippa versus Baroka confrontation, especially after the latter stunned football followers nationwide when they knocked out Kaizer Chiefs in the same competition in 2011.

However, Chippa coach Dan “dance” Malesela has poured cold water on the giant-killers tag associated with Baroka, saying Chilli Boys would put an end to it.

Malesela’s charges have been in fine form in the league as they currently occupy the sixth spot.

They will be expected to continue with their good run on Sunday, although they have no proven track record of doing well in cup competitions.
