EC jazz singer showcases her talent alongside icons

EASTERN Cape musician Pu2ma Tiso makes her Cape Town International Jazz Festival debut this weekend and when she takes to the stage, this “township girl from Kwazakhele” will do so knowing her late grandmother, Nofanele Ngeni, would have been proud of her.

“I have butterflies in my stomach because I am nervous and I have never been to the Cape Town International Jazz Festival before. But my grandmother always told me it’s good to be nervous before a performance as that helps keep you on top of your game,” she said.

“I am also excited at the same time as I am just a township girl from Kwazakhele who will share the stage with the big names in the music industry. It’s not every day you find a star from Kwazakhele township.”

Two other Eastern Cape artists, Thandiswa Mazwai and Zonke Dikana, are also performing at the festival, which is ranked fourth in the world ahead of Switzerland’s Montreux festival and the North Sea Jazz festival in Holland.

Tiso, 32, who is expected to share the stage with jazz saxophonist and songwriter Kirk Whalum, said while she was a shy person, she would take full advantage of the opportunity.

Grammy award winning singer and songwriter Jill Scott will headline the festival.

“My aim is to impress the international organisers. I want to be well known like Miriam Makeba and get to showcase my talent around the world,” she said.

“There is a song called No More that I performed when I appeared on e-tv’s Sunrise. People were crazy about it and they have been asking about it on my Facebook page. They will be happy to know I will also perform it on Friday.”

Other artists performing at the Cape Town International Convention Centre today and tomorrow include Mafikizolo, Claire Philips, Mi Casa, Khuli Chana, AKA and Jimmy Dludlu.

Tickets, at R440 for a day pass and R645 for a weekend pass, are available at Computicket and Shoprite Checkers.
