EL looks forward to ’60s fest

The Sixties Festival has been around for the past 16 years and will be hosted at the Gonubie Show grounds at the end of the month.

This is the festival’s sixth visit to our city.

Zolani Nonxuba (SUBS:CORR) business developer for Kam valezwe Events, organisers of the festival, said the unique festival “will take you out of the hustle and bustle of the city centre” and promised it would be one to remember.

“What we’ve been doing is bringing a combination of artists down each year, from your house hold names, to R&B artists, hip-hop and even your new upcoming artists – we have something for everyone,” he said.

“We are doing something different, so don’t expect the usual time out with the usual things.”

Festival goers can expect acts from the likes of Donald Moatshe, Vetkuk v Mahoota, Fistaz, Pepsi and many more, some who walked away victoriously at the recent Metro Music Awards.

In addition to the great entertainment value, the festival also offers employment and training opportunities for those involved in the event planning and logistics sector of the entire set-up.

Nonxuba also said they provided business for local B&B’s around areas such as Mdantsane to accommodate out-of-towners, who can enjoy an aspect of our city that is often overlooked.

“We have a huge following in East London and one of our main focuses is to change the perception that many people hold – that East London is just another small city,” said Nonxuba.

“We are bringing a brand here, a structured event that caters mainly to young people; we are excited and want to pull it off successfully.”

Nonxuba said the event catered for 7000 to -8000 attendees. The Johannesburg based Kamvalezwe team have been marketing via national radio stations and have also developed a media partnership with the Daily Dispatch. They said the event grows larger every year.

Daily Dispatch marketing manager, Suren Packery said as the official print media partners the team were for the popular festival they were “ecstatic” to be part of the event.

“The Sixties Festival has quickly become a renowned and regular event in East London and we feel privileged to come on board again this year,” he said.

“Keeping with our mandate to be part of our community, we are glad to be associated with the festival and bring this kind of event to the people of our city.

“It’s an important time, being during Easter and also provides the opportunity to have these national acts perform here, allowing the East London public to see these acts live in their own city.”
