The Western Cape results have been “truly spectacular”‚ former Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Helen Zille said at the Election Commission of SA (IEC) results centre on Thursday.
“I’m delighted with them‚ and it looks as if there’s more good news coming‚” she said in an interview you can watch at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkyurixcZe4.
The party’s biggest victory in the Western Cape‚ where Zille has been premier‚ was “to win ANC municipalities” – which it had done.
“We’ve taken Agulhas‚ it looks as if we’ll take Beaufort-West‚ we’ve got Oudtshoorn. It looks as if we’ll get Cederberg and Matzikama. Those have traditionally been ANC municipalities and it’s wonderful that people have been noticing the difference where the DA governs and are now voting DA themselves. Fabulous‚” said Zille.
She dismissed contentions that the DA had grown considerably in the province in the 2016 local government election and might have reached its ceiling.
“Every single election since 1994 I’ve heard people saying that first the DP (Democratic Party) and then the DA have reached its ceiling.
“They’re completely wrong‚ but commentators carry on making the same point election after election and I hope now that that point will stop being made‚” Zille said.
