EC 'Voice' trio primed for first live performance

Nervous – and excited – sums up the feelings of three Eastern Cape singers ahead of their first live performance on The Voice South Africa tomorrow night.

Sibulele Miti, 28, of King William’s Town, Zoe Mtila, 23, of New Brighton, and Johan Anker, 23, originally from Port Elizabeth but now based in Johannesburg, are among the 16 contestants who will have to impress both the coaches and the voting public.

They, like the other group of 16 last week, will perform in groups of four, coach by coach. After each group’s performance the coaches – Karen Zoid, Bobby van Jaarsveld, Lira and Kahn Morbee – will save one of the team members and the public will vote for their favourite from the remaining three.

Anker, a Grade 11 drama teacher at the National School of Arts (NSA) in Johannesburg, said there was a lot weighing on tomorrow’s performance.

“Nervously excited would describe my feelings the best. I am really prepared for my performance. We have received so much coaching and rehearsal time. Kahn truly is of great help and is very involved in our coaching,” Anker said.

“I am a real perfectionist where music is concerned, so being mediocre would be my biggest fear,” he said.

Asked about his biggest threat, Anker said everyone on #TeamKahn was competition.

“However my music makes it difficult to compete. It is difficult being the only ‘opera dude’, as Kahn says.

Miti, who is on #TeamLira, said she was excited as it would be her first live TV performance.

“I am also nervous at the same time because I want everything about my performance to be almost perfect.

And it has been a busy week with vocal coaching, rehearsals and choosing her wardrobe.

“The most interesting thing for me was shopping. I never thought shopping would be a bit daunting, especially if one’s looking for that great outfit,” she said.

But there is also the fear that she will not do enough to show off her musical talent.

“Every single person here is talented and one cannot choose a person over another. I feel so sorry for the coaches,” she said.

Mtila was also feeling nervous and excited ahead of her performance.

“On Sunday I will be singing a fun song and we have put in so much hard work, from the wardrobe to stage rehearsals.

“It also helps that my coach Bobby is always here giving us pointers. He is not trying to create another Beyonce, but is moulding Zoe.”

Mtila said her biggest fear was falling down the stairs.

“However at this stage I am trying to be as fearless as possible so that I can be focused on stage,” she said.

The Voice South Africa plays on M-Net 101 on Sundays at 5pm. Voting details are announced during the live show and voting closes at 10pm on Thursday. – Yoliswa Sobuwa
