Top actors such as Sello Maake ka-Ncube, and Shona and Connie Ferguson are in the new Mzansi Magic telenovela The Queen, starting next month.

The power couple are behind a number of series and short films such as Rockville and iGazi. The new show makes its television debut on August 1.

The Queen is a fast-paced telenovela about a dedicated wife, mother and successful businesswoman, Harriet Khoza, played by Connie, who is forced to do the unthinkable when her husband’s secret comes to light.

Her husband is played by Treasure Tshabalala, who many will remember for his leading role as Timothy Gumede in the sitcom Nomzamo from 2006-2008. He has also been in Phindi, 90 Plein Street and Generations.

In The Queen, Harriet Khoza has lived her whole life as a spoiled trophy wife, but tragedy strikes and she is forced to take over the family empire and bring unity to the family, which has been at war with itself.

Khoza must do all this while hiding a deadly secret that could tear the family apart.

It is this concealed lie that sets in motion a series of events that will see Khoza battle forces that are out to destroy her life.

Produced by Ferguson Films and set in the contrasting worlds of rich Johannesburg and middle-class Tembisa, the show lays bare the lust for power among the wealthy and their victims.

It also delves into the power struggles women are faced with in business and at home due to cultural practices and beliefs.

Reneilwe Sema, head of drama on local channels at M-Net, said the new show would pose many questions for viewers.

“Women are powerful beings. They can build empires and make homes. And with the same passion that they can build, they can also tear apart.

“This new telenovela will not only expose the flaws and weaknesses of the powerful, it will also hold a up mirror to society by asking how far humans are willing to go to protect their livelihoods and what they believe to be rightfully theirs.”

Other notable actors joining the impressive cast are Sthembiso “SK” Khoza, Natasha Thahane, Mara Louw, Themba Ndaba, Mbali Nkosi, Dineo Moeketsi, Loyiso MacDonald, Zenzo Ngqobe, Zandile Msutwana and Slindile Nodangala.
