East London-born talent scout Elsubie Verlinden returns home next month to host auditions for aspiring artists in the city.

Verlinden is the exclusive agent for the New York Film Academy and director of the Applause Rising Talent Showcase (Arts) International Expo.

Each year Verlinden and her team travel the country hosting auditions for aspiring actors, models, dancers and singers.

Last year saw them coming to East London for the first time.

They are coming again in August and Grens High School will host the auditions.

Successful candidates will go on to national auditions in Johannesburg later in the year.

Verlinden said the chosen artists go to the international expo in the United States next year.

The former Grens High pupil said they encouraged people to audition in more than one category.

“If they are actors then we get them to model as well. When we go overseas it always works to their advantage if they audition for more than two categories.”

Candidates who were chosen last year will attend the international convention next week. “This Friday we are leaving for the United States with some of the talent we chose from last year,” she said.

Among those bound for the US are Mthatha’s Bachumile Mlandu and Port Elizabeth’s Marissa la Reservee.

Verlinden said over the years some of their stars had won scholarships at the New York Film Academy. “There are casting agents, producers, record labels and other agents who will be there scouting for talent. This is a great opportunity for our talent.”

Verlinden urged those interested to register because they would only see those who had booked spots on the day.

“There’s a lot of preparation that goes into the auditions.

“We will give people the details of what’s expected when they audition,” she said.
