With the help of Mnquma Local Municipality, aspiring artist Fezz Jnr is on the road to fulfilling his dream of becoming a singer.

Fezz Jnr, whose real name is Fezile Makohliso, was last year’s winner of the trufm Talent Search competition.

The talent search saw the station visit various towns and cities around the province hosting auditions.

Makohliso auditioned for the competition in Butterworth and was one of the two selected from the area to proceed to the next stage.

With the assistance of Mnquma Local Municipality he was able to attend workshops in King William’s Town.

After winning the competition he recorded a song with Afro-soul singer, Dumza Maswana, titled Imizamo. The song is currently playing on leading radio stations across the country.

On Wednesday this week the organisers of the trufm Talent Search handed a token of their gratitude to the leadership of Mnquma in recognition of the vital role they played in helping Makohliso.

He received funding to help with transport and accommodation to be able to attend the workshops.“Without their support I would not have been able to attend the workshops and become the winner of the competition,” said Makohliso.

Winning the competition gave him the courage to pursue his dreams and in April he moved to Johannesburg to pursue a career in music.

“After winning the competition I thought it would make things easier for me in Johannesburg but that was not the case. For the longest time I was performing in shows for free.

“People would say it’s good for publicity but things were tough for me,” he said.

Only a few weeks ago his prayers were answered when one of the country’s best-known record labels called him.

“I have been sending my demo and profile to a number of record labels but there has not been any feedback. I did a number of radio interviews with stations such as Ukhozi FM and UMhlobo Wenene and I was also on Live AMP,” he said, adding that he was in talks with the record label.

“I cannot mention names now but all I can say is things are looking great. I will start working on my debut album very soon.”

The 25-year-old is a self-taught guitarist and song writer, singing since the age of 10.

In 2010 he was introduced to international and contemporary gospel music when he joined Rhema Umtata Christian Church Ministries and fell in love with the ministry.

“As a Christian my music is now inspired by the love I have for God and my passion to proclaim the name of the Lord throughout the earth.”

Prior to entering the trufm Talent Search, Makohliso said he was performing and pushing his music in Butterworth.

One of his highlights includes when he shared the stage with Vusi Nova at the Mnquma’s Women’s Day celebration.

Makohliso said he was going back to Johannesburg next week to start working on his album.
