BIG BREAK: The Mdantsane Gospel Choir will be launching its debut album this Sunday at the God is Able Fellowship Church
Three years after staging its first live performance at the uLoyiso Community Church, the Mdantsane Gospel Choir is ready to launch its debut album.

The launch will take place on Sunday at the God is Able Fellowship in Mdantsane.

ChoIr co-founder Luckie Shongwe said they started in 2013 with the hope of empowering the youth of Mdantsane.

“The concept is for the benefit of young people who are committed to serving the community with dignity and respect through music in one voice, one heart and one spirit but from different denominations,” Shongwe said.

He said the theme for the album was Sing unto Him a New Song.

“All our albums will be named after the units in Mdantsane but we will have a different theme through the albums,” he said.

Shongwe said the album featured Malibongwe Gcwabe, Yolanda Vuthela, Lusizo Kango, Cebo Mzanywa, Simangaliso Zitumane, Siphamandla Samuel and Mncedi Liwani, who is a poet.

He said since their first performance at uLoyiso Community Church in 2013, they knew that they were on the right path and had always looked at uniting churches in song.

The choir has also sung in the Royal Tabernacle International Church in the East London CBD and Full Gospel Church and Twelve Apostles Church of Christ in Mdantsane.

With the new album due, the group has not only managed to spread the gospel around Buffalo City Metro but has also received two award nominations – best local gospel group and best new artist categories in the Eastern Cape Music Awards.

To vote for the choir sms “name of the category, MGC” to 33459. The ECMAs are taking place on November 19.

Last year the choir was nominated for the Kumkani FM Awards.

The group heads for a Swaziland and Botswana tour early next year.

Artists that will feature at the album launch on Sunday include Jumbo, Bethusile Mncinga, Timoti Mabuti, Malibongwe Gcwabe and Veliswa Skeyi as choir motivator. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
