The Lego foundation has teamed up with Sesame Workshop, the non-profit educational organisation behind Takalani Sesame, for a new multimedia experience titled Play Well and Be Happy.

The programme is aimed at children and caregivers in the Eastern Cape and is the latest workshop intervention in the region.

It is designed to unlock the power of play to create transformative, hands-on learning experiences.

Takalani Sesame, together with Lego, has started distributing study and play materials to schools around the province.

The materials feature the famous and loveable Takalani Sesame muppets and Lego Duplo bricks.

About 1000 schools in the province will be visited and more than 60000 children are expected to benefit from the programme.

The new resources build on the success of previous community engagement materials supplied by Takalani Sesame handed out to promote literacy, mathematics and other cognitive skills for more than two years.

In addition to the material, teachers and caregivers will be trained in understanding and adopting learning through play concepts.

Speaking at the launch yesterday, Sesame Workshop executive vice-president Sherrie Westin said: “We are thrilled to team up with the Lego foundation to bring educational lessons to Eastern Cape through engaging play.”

Kasper Kanstrup from Lego said learning through play “built a range of essential life skills such as problem solving and communication skills”. — qaqambam@dispatch.co.za
