Trevor Noah's book gets a nod at prestigious American NAACP awards

SA comedian Trevor Noah has joined the likes of Beyoncé‚ Chance the Rapper‚ The Rock and Kendrick Lamar on the nominees list of the 2016 NAACP Image Awards.

It has been revealed that Trevor Noah’s book Born A Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood has been nominated for two awards at the ceremony.

The book has been nominated in the Outstanding Literary Work – Debut Author and Outstanding Literary Work – Biography/ Auto-Biography categories.

Trevor was honoured by the nominations. “So incredibly honoured to be nominated for two Image Awards for Born A Crime. Thank you NAACP for this amazing recognition!” he said.

Trevor’s book has enjoyed massive success in America since its worldwide release on November 15. The book made the prestigious New York Times bestseller list. A audio book version of the autobiography also become a bestseller on Amazon’s audio books service Audible.

US music icon Beyoncé leads the NAACP nominations with seven nods‚ followed by her sister Solange Knowles‚ with five. Chance the Rapper and Kendrick Lamar each received four nominations.

The NAACP Image Awards‚ now in its 48th year‚ is the brainchild of the American National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People‚ and celebrates the accomplishments of people of colour in the fields of television‚ music‚ literature and film.

According to a statement from the event’s organisers‚ the awards also honour groups or individuals “who promote social justice through creative endeavours“.

This year’s awards will be hosted by popular US comedian Anthony Anderson.

Winners will be announced at a glitzy star-studded ceremony in Hollywood on February 11 2017.
