EC actress sets silver screen alive in prison drama

The Eastern Cape’s Zola Nombona plays a lead role in the latest Mzansi Magic drama series, Lockdown, which has captured the hearts of South Africans.

For the past two weeks viewers of the show have been awe-struck by the talent shown by the all-female cast on the fictional prison drama series.

The Lockdown inmates are led by the tough Ma Z (Dawn Thandeka King), who wants nothing more than to gain her freedom so she can become a good mother to the daughter she left on the outside. Cunning and not beyond using manipulation, she will do anything or destroy anyone to meet her goal.

One of those people happens to be the beautiful and talented Monde, played by Nombona.

Monde is a young woman who left the shelter of her small town life to pursue fame and fortune in the dazzling lights of “Egoliwood”.

Nombona, 23, said she had enjoyed playing the role of Monde.

“When I was preparing for this role I didn’t want to watch any videos about prisons or that kind of stuff. I wanted to be as authentic as I could be and not do something I’d seen before somewhere.

“I have never been to jail and Monde had also never been there.

“I wanted this to be her first experience of prison and not be inspired by any other role,” she said.

The Mthatha-born actress has played lead roles in shows such as Forced Love, Z’bondiwe and Single Guys and Single Gals.

She said acting alongside the all-woman cast of Lorcia Cooper, Slindile Nodangala, Lindiwe Ndlovu and Nomsa Buthelezi was inspiring.

“You would expect to get tension in an all-female cast but there was none of that.

“There was a lot of support and love from all the ladies.

“I still talk with some of them even after we finished shooting.

“Even the actors who have been doing this for many years were down-to-earth and helpful towards everyone.

“We all had the same mind-set,” she said.

Nombona warned that people should expect plenty of change in the coming weeks as the plot line of the show developed, especially around her character.

“She will crack and let people see who she really is.” There are 11 more episodes to go.

The show has been produced by Black Brain Pictures.

The production company does commercials and has worked on TV shows such as Thandeka’s Diary, Abo Mzala and City Ses’la.

Talks of a second season have not started yet. Lockdown is screened every Monday at 8pm and the repeat on Sundays is at 9pm on Mzansi Magic. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
