Nomisupasta, the youngest of the Mazwai sisters and general manager of the Soweto Theatre, has teamed up with San Francisco-based producer Nezbeat to release a new album.

Nomisupasta whose real name is Nomsa Mazwai, had an impressive start to her career with her self-titled debut album winning a South African Music Award (Sama) for best adult alternative African album in 2011.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch, Nomisupasta said the new album is a mixture of lounge and dubstep.

“The nine-track offering has a sound that is captivating and addictive, surprising as the music does not sound typically South African,” she said, adding: “If you love Bjork, Enja, Little Dragon, Kyle Deutsch, you’ll love it”.

“On the album, key influences – such as Letta Mbulu and popular nursery rhymes – are featured.”

The Nomisupasta and Nezbeat duo go under the name NomiNez and the album is titled First Contact.

The University of Fort Hare graduate, who was also the university’s first female president of the student’s representative council, revealed that she met Nezbeat at a roof-top party in Brooklyn, New York through a band called Afrolicious.

“We immediately fell in love and decided to record an album together,” she said. “To date, we have recorded two – the first one is the one that’s just been released. It’s already available online and will soon be in stores across South Africa.”

Nomisupasta said the title track of the album is about her mother, being her “first contact”.

Her mother died when she was only seven but Nomisupasta said she sees her mother in her older sister Thandiswa.

“She has really been a true friend, sister and mother to me, showing me unconditional love ... I see my mother in my sister Ntsiki too – my only true protector in the world. And, of course, we know that our first loves will always be our only true heartaches in the world!”

The full album is available on www.nomisupasta.com and on all digital platforms. — ziphon@dispatch.co.za
