Mdantsane musico raps way to title

Mdantsane rapper Azzy EC was recently crowned the winner of 5FM’s “King of the Rap Factor” contest.

The contest, which is a feature on 5FM DJ Ms Cosmo’s hip-hop show, The Stir Up, sees two rappers battling it out every week and five listeners call in to vote for their favourite – whoever gets more votes, moves on to the following week.

Each week a new rapper battles the previous week’s winner for the ultimate title – King of the Rap Factor.

Azzy_EC, whose real name is Azola Matayitayi said he entered the rap competition late last year and was crowned the King of the Rap Factor 2017 last month.

“A rapper records a verse and sends it to the station to compete with another rapper.

“Five callers get to vote for the better rapper’s verse and the winner goes on to the next week to defend his title.

“Then if one wins for 10 consecutive weeks, they will be crowned the king of the rap factor and that comes with benefits of a 5FM hamper and your music gets airplay on the show,” he said.

Matayitayi said he had no idea he would be crowned the winner when he first entered.

“I never thought that my verses would play on 5FM for two months and two weeks and have a radio DJ say my name for that long.

“It has been a great experience working on verses for each week – for South Africa to hear and love my talent for that long,” he said.

Some of the beats he used include those of rappers such as AKA, Cassper Nyovest and DJ Vigilante.

The 23-year-old said he wrote his first verse at the age of 13.

Matayitayi said winning such a competition was confirmation that he was on the right track and would continue pursuing his dream of becoming a recognised musician nationally.

“I personally feel that this accolade will open many doors for me and the best thing I want as an artist is to be heard,” he said, adding he would release a new single later this month.

He added that his plan was to take his music on a national level and put his hometown on the map.

“I’ve performed at some gigs in East London and outside East London. But I’m still trying to strengthen that side because the people have to know the guy behind the music.”
