Former Eastern Cape Audio Visual Centre (ECAVC) director Sy Ntuli, who left the company to focus on his music career, is off to the United States today.

Ntuli will represent South Africa at the Southwest International Conference and Festival to be held in Austin, Texas.

The festival, also known as SXSW, is the biggest music and film conference in the world that attracts thousands of key industry players from around the globe.

It is an international platform where creative people, companies and movers-and-shakers meet to share creative ideas, information, network, and do business.

It is also a perfect platform for artists to showcase their talents on the international stage in front of the most influential industry players.

“I am so excited to have been selected to represent South Africa at this year’s SXSW in the USA. I am going to America as an independent artist and as a music businessman.

“I will be meeting international music promoters to get more gigs overseas; music supervisors to get synchronisation deals, and I am also eyeing collaborations with some top international artists,” said Ntuli, who was selected by Independent Music Exporters of South Africa (Imexsa) to be a part of the international festival, which starts today and ends on March 20.

The award-winning jazz musician left ECAVC late last year to focus on building his brand.

“I had spent a lot of time focusing on other peoples’ music careers at the expense of my own. It was time to shift the focus now before I forget my first love,” Ntuli said. While building his own brand and promoting his music is his first priority this year, Ntuli said he would also use the time to do some consultation work for various municipalities in the Eastern Cape.

“I am currently doing my masters and my research is on artist development in the province. I will also use the time to help other artists,” he said. Ntuli added that the USA tour comes at the right moment, with his new album Back2Music due to be released next month.

Ntuli revealed that his new album sounds similar to his Metro FM Music Award winning debut album titled, Uyivila, and is targeting international market.

“I want to tour and perform overseas, and win some Grammy Awards like Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Soweto Gospel Choir.

“To conquer the world, you must be original and authentic.

“You just have to tell your own story, represent your own culture, not someone else’s.

“That’s what my new album is about,” he said.

The album will be available for purchase at all online stores such as CDBaby, Amazon, iTunes, Spotify and Dezeer.

“It was about time to release something because it was unfair on the people that have been supporting my music. I am really excited about my return to the music industry,” he said. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
