Mthatha-born gospel singer Sibu Mbuku has released her long-anticipated extended play (EP), More Than A Song, which she worked on with United States producer PJ Morgan.
The opportunity to work with Morgan came when she attended a conference in the USA in 2015 with her brother, pastor Gugu Mbuku.
During the conference she got the opportunity to sing a song that earned her a recording deal with Morgan.
Morgan is a well-known musician and producer who has worked with gospel greats such as Yolanda Adams, Donnie McClurkin, Ben Tankard and Karen Clark-Sheard.
Speaking with the Daily Dispatch yesterday, Mbuku said she was happy that her EP was finally out.
“It was a long process. The enemy was fighting me but I believe now is the perfect time for the EP to be released,” she said.
Mbuku believes that God was taking her through a process of growth and trust before the release of the EP.
“The journey to finally releasing this EP was not easy.
“There wasn’t much that needed to be done to the project but it just went on,” she said.
“People were asking me about it and some were even mocking me.”
While waiting for the project to be finalised, Mbuku said Morgan became more than just a producer.
“He became a mentor to me. He told me not to rush things because we may end up releasing a premature product and that if the time to release it has not come, it may not do what it’s intended to do,” she said, explaining that it had been a spiritual process for her.
“I believe that I am more mature than I was when I was recording this EP. My family has also been very supportive towards this whole journey.
“My brother has been wonderful, constantly motivating me,” she said, adding that her brother had produced one of the songs on the EP.
In 2014, Mbuku was one of the top five finalists on SABC2’s I Want to Sing Gospel show. Although she did not make it to the top, Mbuku said she learned a lot about the music business, from finding her sound to defining her image.
She is finishing up writing her first prayer book, which she plans to release later this year.
“I also have a live recording deal with PJ. We will be recording in East London,” she said.
“This project has made me trust God’s plan for my life – I had to shut myself off from the world to hear God’s voice,” she said.
