Henderson race brings out the best

Mountain Bikers will be in full flight today when the Twizza Henderson Valley MTB race gets under way from Ferndale, Cathcart this morning.

Around 350 mountain bikers will be taking on the various distances in what is expected to be a full day of action.

The main 57km and 45km races should see top competitors looking to battle it out.

In the men’s division Jason Peach will be one of the favourites and he will be looking to win after he finished third last year.

“I always look forward to the Henderson,” said Peach.

“Last year it was quite cool as they changed it up a bit and we did the course backwards, which added a new dynamic to the race I am not sure if they will do that again but I am looking forward to seeing what will be in store.”

Norman Boy, who finished fourth last year and 2016 Daily Dispatch mountain bike champ Jonty Rosenstrauch will also take part and could give Peach a bit of a challenge.

“There are always a few guys who you have to keep an eye on in the race but so far I haven’t heard if it will be that competitive. But you never know who will come in lateand I will just have to see on the day,” said Peach.

On the women’s front Lara-Anne Everts-Van de Venter will be looking to defend her title.

She is one of the region’s best mountain bikers and it will take a big effort to beat her.

“They always have something different for us. The routes are always great so it is definitely worth the little trip out of town,” said Everts-Van de Venter.

“It will be interesting depending on the conditions on the day and I think there will be a good field which always adds excitement to the race.”

“But regardless of what happens I think it will just be a lovely day out.”

Also adding to this year’s race will be three trail runs, which should attract a number of participants who might not have been keen to get on the bike.

A 20km, 10km and 5km trail run will be available, so people with different fitness levels can all be involved.

With something for everyone available, it should be a fantastic day out for the entire family.

“A beautiful calm winter day is forecast with a frosty start and no wind which is perfect for cycling,” said race organiser Rob Snelling.

“Our gravel road is being graded at the moment which will be a relief for people with low cars.”

The races get under way from 9am at 10 minute intervals, as well as the runs, with the last riders expected in by 1.30pm and the prizegiving set for 2pm.
