East London residents are spoilt for choice with an array of fun activities this weekend.
Yesterday the Great Kei municipality mayor Loyiso Tshetshe officially opened the Morgan Bay Footprints Festival, while the long-awaited East London Ports Festival makes a comeback at the East London harbour this morning.
Footprints Festival, in its fourth year, encourages attendees to reduce their carbon footprint and rather make their way through the small town and explore the stalls.
“It’s a combination of ecstatic fun, sports and exciting music with lots of arts and crafts exhibited at various stalls,” event coordinator Colin Hosek said.
Last night, national headliner Msaki and Kathy Raven were expected to wow the crowds at the Gxara village where they were scheduled to perform while Aston Wiley from The Voice SA, was expected to entertain at the Morgan Bay Hotel.
Today it is all systems go for the East London Port Festival which also boasts a packed line-up of local artists, jazz bands, dance groups and tugboat and ferry rides.
SA Navy frigateSAS Spioenkop and polar supply and training vessel SA Agulhas, that recently returned from a scientific expedition to Antarctica, and the Victoria Mxenge coastal patrol vessel and the Samsa training vessel will be among the vessels open to the public.
The 121m-long SAS Spioenkop, which is equipped with a 76mm cannon and a 35mm dual-purpose cannon, as well as smaller calibre arms, sailed into East London on Tuesday evening just for the festival.
Port spokesman Terry Taylor told the Saturday Dispatch this week that visitors will have the opportunity to board all three ships at no extra cost.
Other activities include inflatable boat racing, rowing, fishing competitions, an exciting sail-past of yachts, rowing boats, fishing boats and NSRI vessels, three entertainment stages, a craft market, a maritime career exhibition and breathtaking aerobatic displays.
