Three upcoming Mthatha singers who were discovered by Vusi Nova, and who now go by the name of 047, dropped their debut single Ubuhle featuring the award winning singer on Friday.

The singers – Ngcali Nundu, 19, Lihle Baleni, 20, and Sihle Mdaka, 21 – were introduced to the singing sensation a few months back.

A relative of theirs played their music to Vusi Nova. He liked their sound, and a few months later made contact with the boys.

Last month their video, recorded by Vusi Nova, caused a stir on social media with their a capella sounds.

The singer also asked the public to help him come up with a name for the band. After brainstorming some names, they decided on calling the group 047, their hometown’s area dialling code.

Their single also made its television debut last week on SABC1’s youth programme, YoTV.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday, Nundu said they were excited about the progress of the group. “The song is out and people are loving it. It’s amazing how the people have embraced our sound. Things are going great for us and we are excited about this,” he said.

Nundu said some people were confused by their name.

“We’ve had to explain to some people from back home that 047 is the area code and now they are happy for us,” he said.

He also added that this was their way of showing pride in their hometown.

“We could have chosen any other name but we went for 047. We are representing our town and this feels awesome,” he said.

Nundu said they had been singing together for five years and had never thought of coming up with a name for the group.

“We were young when we started singing together and we didn’t really take it seriously. That’s why we didn’t bother coming up with a name. All we knew was that we loved music,” said Nundu.

The group is now signed under Muthaland Entertainment, the same label that Vusi Nova is signed under.

“This has all been made possible by Vusi Nova. Even the YoTV appearance was made possible by him. We are grateful to him,” Nundu said, adding that they were currently working on their second single.

Vusi Nova also gave the trio an opportunity to perform live on the Umhlobo Wenene FM Women’s Day special show last month.

They performed their single, Ubuhle, a milestone for them as their music had never been played on radio before.

“We hope to release our debut album some time next year. For now we will be focusing on singles,” Nundu said.

Nundu said their latest single would be available on all digital stores later this week. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
