Mdantsane-born singer, dancer and actor Yasirah is coming back home this weekend to host the annual Mzantsi Cultural Festival.
The show takes place this Saturday at the Buffalo Park Cricket Stadium.
The headlining acts for the show are Cassper Nyovest, TKZee and Metro FM’s Lerato Kganyaro.
Yasirah, whose real name is Bhelekazi Ruiters, plays the lead role in the upcoming dance movie Pop, Lock ‘n Roll.
The movie will be screened in cinemas nationwide from September 29.
Speaking to the Daily Dispatch yesterday, Ruiters said she was excited about hosting the annual show.
“This is so humbling. I am honoured the organisers saw it fit to make me the host of such a show in my own city,” she said.
“It brings so much joy in my heart to receive support from my own city.”
Many fans will remember Ruiters for her smash hit single Noqatiko, which featured house legends Revolution and Black Motion.
The song saw them being nominated for the best hit collaboration.
Ruiters has also performed at the Metro FM awards and has worked with many well-known musicians, such as Spikiri, and has featured in a number of Mzansi Magic short films in the past few years.
She said this was a special month for her.
“Not only am I the host of this big show, the movie I worked so hard on will finally make its cinema debut,” she said.
Currently based between East London and Johannesburg, Ruiters said there would be a special screening of the movie this week before it made its nationwide debut.
“I am so excited this is finally happening. We worked hard to make this movie. We worked in about 10 locations across Johannesburg and Soweto,” Ruiters said.
The movie, which follows a Brazilian woman’s (played by Ruiters) dream of becoming a star one day, was written by Steven Pillemar, directed by Ziggy Hofmeyr and co-produced by Mayenzeke Baza and Pascal Schmitz.
Also playing a lead role in the movie is Isidingo’s Maurice Paige, who plays Calvin on the show.
“It’s been amazing to be given such creative freedom.
“This is a rare opportunity to showcase both my acting and music. The film is the perfect vehicle for this,” Ruiters said, adding that she performs four songs in the movie.
General tickets for the show cost R150 and VIP tickets are R350, available through Computicket.
