While the festive season for most parts of the country starts in December, in East London for the past few years it has started early, in September in fact.
This was again the case when the Mzantsi Cultural Festival at Buffalo Park on Saturday became the official launch of what promises to be another sensational festive season for EL revellers.
And it was opened in style with Mzantsi’s music star of the moment, hip-hop sensation Cassper Nyovest sharing a stage with one of the most legendary kwaito groups in South Africa, TKZee.
Buffalo Park Stadium was lit until the wee hours of yesterday when TKZee stole the show and brought the house down with performances of most of their all-time greats such as Shibobo, Palafala and Dlala Mapantsula.
Even the main act, Cassper, failed to outshine the legendary group made up of Kabelo Mabalane, Zwai Bala and Tokollo Tshabalala.
While the Tito Mboweni hitmaker did his utmost to impress, the crowd was simply flat by the time he took to the stage at 3.30am in what was a marathon of performances.
If Cassper’s performance is anything to go by, his hip-hop rival AKA will be out to make a statement when he comes down on October 14 in his one-man show.
The chilly and cloudy weather did not keep fun lovers away and event organisers Posega Lifestyle prepared well by erecting a giant marquee to ensure that weather was not going to spoil the party.
Cassper and TKZee were not the only acts as partygoers were entertained earlier by the likes of MetroFM presenter Lerato Kganyago.
But dance music was not the only genre on offer as Afro-soul was also represented by none other than rising stars Msaki and Olothando who both dished out almost perfect performances
All local acts including DJ Welo SA and Yoba also did not disappoint.
One grumble was host Yasirah, otherwise known as Noqatiko, who did not seem to connect with the audience. — zingisam@dispatch.co.za
