Innovative artist hopes to inspire rural kids

Self-taught ballpoint artist Themba Mkhangeli, who is using social media to share his work, hopes to use his art to inspire other rural kids to dream big.

The 22-year-old Mthatha-born artist, now based in Cape Town, started sharing his work on Facebook about two years ago.

Growing up in Julukuqu village, which is not far from Mqhekezweni in Mthatha, Mkhangeli said he realised that he was meant to do art.

“I started doing art at the age of five but it was during school that it clicked that this is my calling. The other children at school encouraged me and that helped grow my confidence,” he said.

Through Facebook, Mkhangeli said he was able to get hold of a gallery owner that allowed him to exhibit his work.
