Afro soul singer Dumza Maswana is living testimony that hard work and perseverance pay off.

The Peddie-born singer, who left his home in 2005 for Johannesburg to follow his dream of becoming a musician, told the Daily Dispatch that 2017 has been a great year for him.

“A lot of amazing things have happened that I didn’t expect and I praise God for that.”

Maswana released his second album, titled Molo, this year and it saw him doing shows around the province and in Johannesburg.

The album received its first South African Music Award (Sama) nomination for best African adult album alongside Kelly Khumalo, Nathi, Nozipho and Soul Kulture.

“I got to perform at the prestigious jazz lounge, The Orbit, twice this year. I launched my album there and it was a sold-out show. They called me again and I did a tribute to Victor Ntoni and it was also a sold-out show,” he said.

Going into the new year, Maswana said he was working on a project with the award-winning jazz pianist and composer Nduduzo Makhathini.

Another big achievement for him was getting his music play-listed on major radio stations across the country and being featured in various media platforms.

“Stations such as Kaya FM, Radio 2000, Tru FM and Umhlobo Wenene have been really supporting me,” he said, adding he had done two live performances at Kaya FM.

The singer also recently did a show with East London’s own Msaki at the Lyric Theatre in Johannesburg.

In 2018 he has a pending song with Black Coffee. Maswana went on Twitter this year to ask the BET award winning DJ what he needed to do to work on a song with him.

The humble DJ said he had to do nothing and he would work with him.

“I can always wait for a huge artist like him and I believe that all good things happen in their right time,” he said. — poliswap@dispatch.co.za
