East London’s Shirley and the Shotguns band will be launching their debut album at Legends Showcase this Saturday.

As a buildup to the big day the band, which does alternative rock, has performed in Bathurst, Stutterheim and Cape St Francis.

The band comprises Andrew Mogridge on vocals and sometimes guitar, Themi Cooras on guitar, Cheryl Minkley on bass and keys, and Greg Wild on drums.

Speaking with the Daily Dispatch, Minkley said the band had been well received by the public.

Minkley described their sound as “catchy, quirky and original, raucous now and then, occasionally melancholy, and always with a twinkle in its eye”.

She said the four-piece outfit has had the honour of being joined by their band member’s son, George Cooras, as a support act.

“We are very proud of what a great job he’s been doing, so people can look forward to that added bonus at our show.”

She said they were looking forward to bringing their sound back home after travelling around the province. “It’s now time for our friends and family to enjoy the experience,” she said, adding that hard copies of their album would be available on the day.

Minkley said the self-titled CD was recorded live and old-school in their band-room. Catch them this Saturday at Legends Showcase.

Tickets cost R60 and are available from Lee Gold Music.
