Khayelitsha life showcased in new drama

Known for producing compelling content, Mzansi Magic is set to release yet another drama series, Nkululeko. Nkululeko is a coming-of-age story set in the windswept streets of one of South Africa’s most infamous townships, Khayelitsha, in Cape Town.

The drama series, making its debut on January 7, has been produced by new storytellers, Dumile Films, and will feature some new and old faces.

Nkululeko Zwai is played by newcomer Aphiwe Mkefe, who is a talented mathematician preparing for a competition that could change his life and destiny forever.

When he makes an impulsive decision in a moment of blossoming love, he suddenly finds himself in deep trouble and everything he has worked so hard for falls apart – leaving his future in jeopardy.

It is at the centre of Nkululeko’s unravelling that viewers would be introduced to Sibulele Nginda, played by Ziyanda Nyoka, who is the daughter of a well-known Khayelitsha police brigadier. Sibulele is exceptionally smart, independent and, while the two are drawn to each other like moths to a flame, it is their meeting that ignites a series of events destined to change their world forever.

M-Net’s director of local entertainment, Reneilwe Sema said through the lives of the youngsters in Nkululeko they would delve into the dynamics of society to explore the complexities of the journey to adulthood in modern-day South Africa.

“At the heart of this story are great lessons about life, consequences and fate.”

Joining the cast for 13 episodes is Tina Jaxa, Abongile Matsai, Andile Mxakaza, Jet Novuka and Chris Gxalaba, who plays the role of Nkululeko’s father.

Dumile Films’ Sibulele Siko-Shosha said the drama series was a socially relevant story that they were proud to tell. “Having grown up in Khayelitsha, I am humbled by the opportunity given by Mzansi Magic to showcase local stories, providing a platform to a new breed of storytellers.”

Nkululeko will air on January 7 at 8pm on Mzansi Magic, channel 161. —
