Local artists will get a chance to entertain the masses this week as Buffalo City Metro hosts its carnivals in Mdantsane and East London.
The King William’s Town carnival was held last weekend. The Mdantsane carnival, on its last day today, saw the likes of DJ GQ, Dj Agent Lungaz, Imonti Jazz Band, Ikwezi Jazz Band, Andile Lento, Shekinah, Mafikizolo and Samthing Soweto, to mention a few, performing.
BCM started the festival season on a high note as it hosted the annual switching on of the lights events in King William’s Town and East London early this month.
The carnivals, which started last week, also form part of the R5.5-million that the metro has put aside for entertainment. BCM spokesman Samkelo Ngwenya said the metro took a decision to be biased towards local artists and invest in encouraging them. “This is evident by us having 200 local artists who will be performing during our shows, excluding the many other promoters’ events,” he said.
To stay true to their plan of supporting local artists, homegrown talent has been leading all the lineups of their events, with only two or three national acts making appearances each day.
Yesterday in Mdantsane, the national acts were Shekinah, Mafikizolo and Samthing Soweto. Today, Lady Zamar, Professor and Prince KB will be headlining the Mdantsane day.
For the East London carnival taking place tomorrow, top acts include OkMalumKoolKat, Naak Musiq, Distruction Boyz and East London’s very own Mobi Dixon.
All the events have local talent acting as the hosts. One of the hosts, Silk Damoyi, who was teamed up with Tru FM’s Lovely Khanyi, yesterday said it was his first time hosting one of BCM’s carnivals and was excited about the stage.
“I have been knocking for a while now since my days at Mdantsane FM. Last year I spoke to someone and I was offering to do this for free but I was late. With some assistance this year, I submitted and here we are,” he said. Damoyi said he was big on empowering local acts from all levels and feels that the metro could do more in time.
