Reunion party on track

Plans are on track for the eighth annual Native Mdantsane Summer Reunion at Winter Rose rugby stadium in NU13 next week.

Founder and coordinator Thabo Seboka said the event was not only meant to welcome back those who had left the township and province in search of greener pastures, but also to give visitors a taste of what the famous township had to offer.

Seboka said a number of the best local artists and musicians were set to showcase their latest offerings.

Each year, Mdantsane Summer Reunion organisers review the artists in the Eastern Cape and book those who were working harder than the rest, pursuing their dream, making new music and pushing their careers.

Over 20 local artists have been chosen to perform this year.

However, Seboka said this year they had also decided to invite two national artists – legendary “godfather of house” DJ and producer Christos, and soulful house music DJ Lady Sakhe.

“This event is intended to celebrate the return to their beloved home town of those who come home to Mdantsane during holidays.

“The reunion also presents an opportunity for returning young people to catch up with what has been happening in Mdantsane while they were away.

“At most events only big artists get to perform at prime time and local artists are put on during the day before most people arrive.

“This event aims at giving a bigger spotlight to local talent,” he said.

Seboka said as another way to ensure that the event promoted and groomed home talent, they chose a different local personality every year to co-host it alongside a celebrity who had tons of experience so that they could teach and guide local MCs.

Hosting this year’s event is actress, singer and dancer Solo Rungqu, who is best known for her role as tough, opinionated welder Morongwa Kau on SABC3 soapie Isidingo. The Eastern Cape-born Rungqu will be joined on stage by Mdantsane FM radio personality Simply Enhle.

Seboka said last year’s event had only one woman artist on the lineup so this year they were happy to have included four female talents.

Even though they were faced with weather challenges last year the event attracted more than 8000 people, and the organisers expect at least 10000 this year.

The event is scheduled to start at 3pm next Wednesday. Tickets are available at Computicket and retail from R130 for general access to R400 for VIP. General access tickets will cost R150 at the gate. Partygoers will pay R50 for a cooler box between 3pm and 5pm and thereafter a cash bar will be available. No glass bottles will be allowed at the event.
