Juggling act of womanhood

From marriage and motherhood to relationships and careers, women find themselves having to juggle everything, which makes 1Magic’s latest drama series Unmarried a fascinating proposition.

Unmarried explores the dynamics a group of female friends go through. It delves into the lives of three young women friends living in Johannesburg, as they juggle the pressures of marriage, motherhood, relationships and their careers.

The three women represent a diverse cross-section of South African life, from township to suburb and the high-end apartment lifestyle of the “super blessed”.

The show makes its debut on channel 103 on February 2.

The leading roles are played by Renate Stuurman, Thembisa Mdoda and Keke Mphuti.

Set in the City of Gold, the three completely different women, brought together by friendship, share their hardships and triumphs.

Brenda, played by Stuurman, is the perfect definition of #relationshipgoals with her husband of nearly 10 years. She boasts a fierce corporate career at a highly fashionable private bank where she’s rising rapidly through the ranks, despite the fact that she is one of the few women in senior management.

One of her closest friends, Lesego – played by Mphuti – is the hottest in the group, and she has used her looks to get what she wants.

Thembi, played by the South African Film and Television award-winning Mdoda, happens to be the only one of the three with children.

She fell pregnant at 17 by her childhood sweetheart.

Renate Stuurman told the Daily Dispatch yesterday that many women would relate to the storyline.

Stuurman is best known for her soapie roles as Denise in SABC2’s 7de Laan, Jade in SABC3’s Isidingo and Tamia Bardill in Scandal! on e.tv.

“The show is about managing relationships and careers, and just finding balance as a woman,” she said, adding she related to some of the things the characters go through.

“I have been in similar situations before. Finding balance is everything, from working to friendships and having time to yourself.

“There are a lot of questions we ask ourselves. Even on the show we explore if it’s possible to be everything to everyone, and these are questions that many women have to ask.”

Hear Me Move dance film star Nyaniso Dzedze is one of the male actors on the show. He plays Mdoda’s childhood sweetheart and later father of her children.

Other male actors include Fezile Makhanya, who plays the role of Stuurman’s husband, and Stevel Marc.

Starting time: 7.30pm, February 2, Channel 103.
