SA films shine with African magic

OTELO Burning, Man on Ground and Skeem were among the big winners of the night at the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards.

The films, produced, directed and written by mostly South African crews, took 10 awards among them.

The first annual awards ceremony, which celebrated the best of the African film industry, took place on Saturday in Lagos, Nigeria, and was aired on pay channel Africa Magic. The awards were hosted by celebrity socialites IK Osakioduwa and Vimbai Muntinhiri.

Akin Omotoso, best known for playing Khaya Motene in Generations, nabbed the best film director nod for Man on Ground.

The same film also scored wins for best picture editor, best sound editor and best cinematographer. Omotoso and Rosie Motene – who played Tsego Motene in Generations – produced the film together.

Man on Ground, starring Thomas Gumede and Bubu Mazibuko, was inspired by Ernesto Alfabeto Nhamuave, a Mozambican man who was burnt to death in the 2008 xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

Sara Blecher, director of Otelo Burning, accepted the most coveted award – best film overall – a film that received half of the 28 award nominations.

Otelo Burning also won awards for best make-up artist, best art director and best lighting design.

Tim Greene, writer and director of Skeem, won the awards for best writer in a comedy and best comedy film.

Other winners include Mercy Johnson for best actress in a comedy, Hafuz Oyetoro for best actor in a comedy.

Johnson and Oyetoro were among the more popular winners of the night, receiving standing ovations for their feats. —
