Heavenly music feast for Easter Monday

SABC Crown award nominee Veliswa Skeyi, Sama Award winner Hlengiwe Mhlaba and many other popular local gospel stars will be performing at the Easter Gospel Feast on Monday in East London.

The Easter Gospel Feast will be the first of its kind and is expected to attract music lovers from all over the province.

The show will see many big names in the industry taking centre stage and connecting people to God.

The former Lord Comforters member said she would be performing some songs from her latest album, Sithi uyingcwele. The album was released last year in October. Skeyi said it had been well received nationally.

Since the nationally renowned group split, Skeyi has released eight albums on her own and seven under Lord Comforters. Skeyi said she would be singing some of the popular songs which many had come to know her by.

“My fans know what happens when I am on stage,” said the Dwala Lam singer.

Skeyi has been nominated four times at the popular SABC Crown awards since she went solo.

She said she was excited about the newly created platform for Eastern Cape artists.

“During this time of the year most of us gospel artists go to other provinces that host Easter shows,” she said.

Skeyi said for the past couple of years she had been going to Johannesburg for the Rand Easter Show.

“Now we won’t have any reason to leave because there is a platform. I like the vision of this event and I pray God blesses it.”

The Dwala Lam singer said she was happy the event would not only showcase nationally-acclaimed artists but would also give aspiring artists a chance to worship among the people they grew up looking up to.

“We have all been given voices to worship and I am honoured I will be sharing a stage with some young people. It is a brilliant idea to mix the show up,” she said.

Skeyi urged gospel lovers not to miss the show as it was the first of its kind, offering people a wide variety of heavenly voices.

Another crown nominee who will be performing at the show is Sivuyile “Vovee” Batala and his wife, Andy. Batala started performing when he was 15 years old and also shared a stage with then popular group, the Lord Comforters. He currently runs his own studio which has recorded many local artists in the province.

Batala has written and produced tracks for national gospel artists like the late Vuyo Mokoena, Rebecca Malope, Lundi, Malibongwe Gcwabe, Veliswa Skeyi and Mzoxolo the first runner-up of season one of the popular SABC programme, I WAnt to sing Gospel.

Batala and his wife met at uLoyiso Community Church and they were both actively involved in the music ministry.

Their love and passion drew them closer and in 2011 they married and started recording songs professionally.

Batala said they would be singing songs from their new album, Sikwenza Mkhulu, at the show. The album will be released early in April but some of the songs on it are already receiving airplay. Batala said they had already shot a music video for one of the songs and it would play on the SABC gospel show this weekend.

From singing at funerals and shop openings in his hometown in Kokstad, Mdumiseni Nzimande has became one of the best gospel artists the province has produced. Nzimande, well-known as Dumi Mkokstad, will also be blessing the mic at the Easter Gospel Feast on Monday.

Mkokstad said he would be performing new songs from his latest album, Mbize uJehovah. “I will sing some of the old songs like Nangu uJesu,” he said.

He said those who have known him to be a dancer should not be disappointed when he does not move as he used to. “ I can’t dance like I used to,” he joked.

Mkokstad said he would spend his Easter weekend visiting churches and would also perform at the Uvukile show in Port Shepstone with artists like Rebecca Malope, Lusanda Mcinga and Skeyi.

Other notable artists who will be performing are Khanyisa Sabuka, Zama Ntshona and the Voice Ministries, Mxolisi Mbethe, Malibongwe Gcwabe, Cece, Lungile Sityana, Mthokozisi Zakwe and Malusi Ndimande.
