New ‘Idols’ season sports two sets of teenage twins

IT HAS never happened before, but the upcoming season of Idols SA has produced two sets of teenage twins.

Watching identical twins Neliswa and Anele Mxhakaza, 17, from Umlazi in Durban, could not be any different from watching 18-year-olds Lebohang and Shalati Mahori from Ga- Rankuwa in Pretoria.

The Mxhakaza lasses are such big fans of US star Beyonce that they genuinely believe the classic All I Could Do Was Cry is the Single Ladies singer’s own song.

Beyonce portrayed the late Etta James on the 2008 musical film Cadillac Records – which is where Anele fell in love with another James song, I’d Rather Go Blind.

Neliswa’s audition song was Beyonce’s Listen from the musical Dreamgirls, while her sister auditioned with All I Could Do Was Cry, and both garnered three resounding nods from the judges.

The twins are so close they even complete each other’s sentences. They also wear matching clothes and sport the same short hairstyles.

And they will both be applying to study law at the University of KwaZulu-Natal next year.

But their petite frames and timid personalities belie their big voices.

“Our mom was not keen on us going alone to audition and sent us with an older friend, but when we broke the news to her that we were headed to Sun City , she was so excited that she cried. She knows we can sing and encourages us,” said Neliswa.

They are convinced they will win the twins’ battle, but admit that they are far more into gospel music than the genres covered in the competition.

For yesterday , the third day of the theatre week, where the remaining contestants were to sing in groups, the pair were looking for lyrics to Michael Buble’s Home, which they had also never heard before.

But then again, season eight winner Khaya Mthethwa didn’t know Nicki Minaj’s music before he recreated her hit Super Bass, which endeared him to the watching public.

Judge Unathi Msengana said she had “goose bumps” listening to Neliswa and Anele.

The new season of Idols SA premieres on July 28 on both M- Net and Mzansi Magic.
